Getting Started
So, you want to enjoy CarnEvil without tracking down a cabinet. We’re here to help. We will not link you to places where you can find these files, but we will tell what things you need and how to use them so you can play CarnEvil on your computer.
Any version of MAME is fine, but we recommend you do not use MAME 0.154, as it does not load any music and is prone to FMV crashes. Earlier versions of MAME also fail to emulate some elements from the game, such as flesh coming out of enemies and glowing effects. This is fixed from 0.153 onward, and we have compared the currently known differences on the right. |

Recently, some visitors have stated that the newest versions of MAME (0.225) cannot run the game, as it requests a file that cannot be found. If this is the case, please try a earlier version of MAME.
This page is just for getting your game running, if your guns aren't working, check out the Diagnostics Menu page.

What You Need
- MAME software
- Carnevil.CHD (usually between 1 and 2gb in size)
- Boot.u32 (512 kb)
- Carnevil_9.u32 (512kb)
- Sound102.u95 (32kb)
CarnEvil Versions
There are two versions of the CarnEvil rom that are readily available, v1.0.1 and v1.0.3. You can tell which version you are running from the MAME menu, but they can also be identified by the date on their diagnostics menu.
There are currently no known major differences concerning gameplay between versions. However, v1.0.3 seems to run better, and v1.0.1 has 1506 files compared to v1.0.3's 1504, and the files are in a different order during the File System Check. Also, v1.0.1 does not have the options to switch between mono/stereo sound or to stop the Guilloteens making rude gestures.
- v1.0.1 - Oct 20 1998 (Diagnostics - version 3.3)
- v1.0.3 - Feb 1 1999 (Diagnostics - version 3.4)

File Organization
Now that you have your files and MAME, you need to arrange the files so that you can get the game to run.
A quick note - if you've not yet installed MAME, be sure to put the installer in its own folder first, so everything will be unpacked in this folder, which will serve as the MAME root folder, rather than being scattered everywhere inside where the installer was downloaded.

- In the rom folder of MAME, place the CarnEvil CHD
- Still inside the rom folder, make a new folder named CarnEvil .
- Ensure that the CHD and the folder have the same name.
- Within the CarnEvil folder place the files Boot.u32, Carnevil_9.u32 and Sound102.u95.
