Umlaut
Tökkentäkker's sidekick, and your host throughout CarnEvil. Don't fret, Umlaut is harmless; that is, until you discover Tökkentäkker's lab!
- Tips & Tricks magazine, March 1999 (non-canon) Umlaut is a flying jester skull with dozens of razor sharp teeth, six purple/gold collar points and a two part jester hat. He shows up before each level to describe what is in store for the player through rhyme, and often insulting him at the same time. Strangely, Umlaut has three unused clips that are coded to the Haunted House. He is voiced by Jack E. Haeger.
He first appears as a stone statue on top of Tökkentäkker's tombstone, as the jester mentioned in the CarnEvil poem. He comes to life when the player inserts a token into his mouth and brings the carnival back from the dead. Ever-present in the decor of CarnEvil, Umlaut appears on Tökkentäkker's tombstone, chair and monocle. He has a large wooden decoration at the entrance of the Freak Show (though his colors are reversed), and on the banner at the carnival's entrance. The other residents of CarnEvil apparently don't like Umlaut very much, as on Dr. Klot's chalkboard someone (likely Dr. Klot himself) wrote "UMLAUT IS A KISS ASS!" It is possible that Umlaut is named after the fact that the bells at the end of his hat might resemble the two dots that constitute an umlaut above letters, or the decorative "metal umlauts" in the names of bands like Motörhead and Mötley Crüe. During Umlaut's rhymes, his color changes if you try to shoot him, making 'please wait' appear. He will remain that color until you shoot again, even after a game over. Boss BattleWhen the player arrives on Tökkentäkker's airship, he must first battle Umlaut. His only attack is biting the player, but he can be difficult to hit due to his small size. He has a bigger health bar than other mid-bosses, though his health itself may be lower.
Unlike most enemies, Umlaut does not bleed when he is shot. Instead, he produces clouds of different colored smoke, and when he dies he shatters into pieces. His model is also never damaged. The smoke that appears when Umlaut is shot is the same as that which replaces enemy's blood with the violence set to 'none', though in white. Umlaut still retains his colored smoke at this setting. Umlaut's battle dialogue loops, starting with "Don't look down" and ending with him laughing. He has unique sound clips for each time he flinches and flips over. The only way to hear them all during play is with Monster Strength set to Very Hard. Attacks |
