Haunted House
Welcome to the Haunted House - The Haunted House is a gloomy dark ride within CarnEvil, located to the left of the Big Top and opposite the Freak Show. The Player moves through many rooms before ending up in the back garden to face Evil Marie. Under default settings, it is the only stage to contain the Shotgun and Clip Upgrade Powerups.
Press reload (Player 1) five times during Umlaut's rhyme and the Zombies will wear hats. Our screenshots will be from Party Hat mode just for fun. |

Entrance
Enemies: Zombies, Vampire Bats, Gools
Powerups: Health Music: The Haunted House (Part 1) The zombies are pretty slow, so the start of the level is good to help you get used to shooting. There is a health powerup inside a ticketbooth shaped like a coffin. Betty shows up twice here. Once running along the hill, and again in front of the door. A zombie will knock down the door, defeat it then you're off into the house. |
Hambone (Mid-Boss)
Enemies: Vampire Bats
Powerups: Shot Gun Music: The Haunted House (Part 1) Betty runs across the room just before the fight with Hambone, while some bats are flying by. Then Hambone shows up, he's on fire for some reason. His only attack is firing at you with his gun arm. Shoot the gun to stop it firing, or shoot his legs to make him fall down. Hambone won't be able to attack while he is knocked down. Hambone doesn't get to wear a party hat. Everyone hates Hambone. Except the developers, since Hambone was the first character trademarked for CarnEvil. If you wait long enough into the fight, the player will duck into the corridor and a Shot Gun powerup will appear. Use this to finish him off. |

Parlor
Enemies: Zombies, Gools, Vampire Bats
Powerups: Shot Gun Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) As soon as Hambone is defeated, there is a shotgun powerup in the cupboard on the left. Close to the fireplace, a zombie will be holding Betty. You do not have to shoot the zombie that is holding Betty. The polar bear rug opens and a few bats emerge, Betty is also hiding in there. |
Parlor 2
Enemies: Zombies, Gools, Spiders, Scratching Hands
Powerups: Clip Upgrade, Health Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) After an impressive Indiana Jones style dive under a closing door, the player arrives in another room. Some Gools will come out of a wardrobe, and some spiders will jump at you. Turning to face the owl painting, there is a zombie, some Health and the Clip Upgrade, and a Gool behind the painting. Grab this now, it's the only one in the whole game! After this the player walks down a corridor full of scratching hands that emerge from holes in the walls. |
Hambone The Revenge (Mid-Boss)
Enemies: Spiders
Powerups: Machine Gun Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) Some spiders will appear in front of a Machine Gun powerup. Like all good slasher movie villains, Hambone is back for the sequel with all new weapons. His gun arm has been replaced with a skull-shooting grenade launcher. He shoots three skulls at a time if you're playing with one player, and six with two players. Shoot the skulls before they hit. He even has all his injuries from the previous fight! Continuity at its finest. His mask can be shot off in this form. If you got the Machine Gun powerup beforehand that should take a good deal of health from him. |

Kitchen
Enemies: Zombies, Gools
Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) A pretty iconic location in CarnEvil. It shows up in the game's attract modes, and the blood spattered everywhere makes it difficult to forget. Be sure to look out for the Main Character's head model in the cooking pot and microwave, as well as the fridge drawing of Evil Marie. There is another zombie holding Betty, but you do need to kill this one to continue, and some Gools show up near the end. |
Upstairs
Enemies: Zombies, Vampire Bats, Giant Spiders, Spiders
Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) Exiting the kitchen, the player is back in the parlor, and looks ready to just leave out the front door until Betty gets his attention. A giant spider kidnaps her, forcing him to follow it upstairs. Do not try to shoot the spider as the camera will jerk to throw you off. and she can't be saved regardless. Two more giant spiders are upstairs. Some small spiders also show up but don't attack. |
Roof
Enemies: Zombies, Giant Spiders, Gools, Vampire Bats
Powerups: Machine Gun, Health Music: The Haunted House (Part 2) As soon as the player gets onto the roof there will be a machine gun powerup. A giant spider will walk over to cover it up so it's impossible to miss. That's the last spider, only bats, zombies and gools are left. Then a car will push you off the roof, there's a health powerup just over the edge, so get it before or while falling. |
Evil Marie (Boss)
Music: The Haunted House Part 2
Unlike most enemies, Evil Marie does not get her body damaged when she is shot, instead, she loses layers of her dress. She has no real weakspot so can be made to flinch and stop attacking from shooting her anywhere. At first she will not bleed when shot, so hitting is instead shown as her being tinted blue. Evil Marie's boss battle consists of several set pieces . The first begins when she emerges from her tomb, she will attack with her axe slash and axe smash. These do the same amount of damage, but axe smash has less start-up lag. When she has lost enough health she will lose the bottom layer of her dress. The bottom layer is very rarely seen because of this. In the second set piece Evil Marie will only throw axes from afar. She will lose the second layer of her dress and teleport back to her original position. She will then run around her tomb and onto a bridge. Some Vampire Bats will fly by but they do not attack and shooting them won't award any points. During the third set piece Evil Marie will alternate between all of her attacks except the energy shot. Occasionally she will change position to the other side of the bridge. She will lose the final layer of her dress, her face will become damaged and her wig will tear. Finally, Evil Marie will resort to just using her energy shot. This attack is very powerful and can hit both players at once. It is recommended that you try to kill her before she can launch her first shot, as it has a lot of start up lag. She is defeated by being impaled on a fountain. When playing with the level of violence set to 'none' or 'green blood', her death scene is censored and the camera will cut away before it can be shown. |
